Analysis:

Bernie does have a plan to break up the banks: Enough with the handwringing over that Daily News interview (Salon)

Analysis:

This Salon piece is a defense of Bernie's policies and plans for executing them after he received criticism for his failure to be specific during a Daily News interview on the question of how he would break up the big banks. The article argues that the questions were deliberately designed to confuse him and that he does have a clear plan of how to do this.

Clinton’s no bunny boiler: Sanders campaign turns to ’80s-era sexist stereotypes about female ambition, which will blow up in his face (Salon)

Analysis:

Article from Salon which argues that the Sanders campaign is playing on sexist tropes of power-hungry women from the 1980's in their attacks against Clinton. They believe this campaign strategy will backfire against him.

The “Bernie Bro” smear must go: #BernieMadeMeWhite claps back at idiotic primary meme (Salon)

Analysis:

Salon article pushes back against the "Bernie Bro" meme, in this particular case the attempt to label states that voted for Sanders as being predominantly white. Hawaii, a state which voted for Sanders, is actually the most diverse state in the entire country, which the article points out.

Judd Gregg: Sanders fans are blind to reality of socialism (The Hill)

Analysis:

This article from The Hill talks about Sanders' supporters as misunderstanding the ramifications of socialism, which the writer believes is dangerous. He finds enthusiasm for socialism amongst younger voters surprising and evidence of their ignorance to the history of socialism.

Sanders Over the Edge (NYT)

-Dylan Stump

Analysis:

This much talked about and controversial Paul Krugman piece in the Times delves into the notion of the Sanders campaign as naive and overly idealistic about how to implement seemingly radical policy goals. He criticizes Sanders and lacking depth and nuance when pressed for deeper policy analysis, referencing his highly scrutinized Daily News interview in this regard. Towards the end, he is highly critical of Sanders' tone, embracing the "Bernie Bro" meme of Sanders' supporters as mostly young white men with misogynistic leanings.

Time for Bernie Sanders to Get in Line (Daily Beast)

Analysis:

This Daily Beast article makes the case of Clinton's inevitability and argues that Sanders needs to stop attacking her because he will damage party unity. This article operates from a very Pro-Clinton framework in the assumption that Bernie can't win and assuming he should also be operating on the assumption he can't win.

Why "Bernie Bro" Myth Is Bogus (TYT)

Analysis:

A critique by The Young Turks of the "Bernie Bro" meme. They point out that the original article which spurred this idea cited only two instances of this type of behavior, and that both of these instances were highly questionable. They argue that its unfair to let a small handful of Sanders supporters define his entire campaign.

Bernie Sanders’s Conservative Fanboys (Daily Beast)

Analysis:

This Daily Beast article discusses how republican Super PAC's have been running ads for Bernie as an effort to weaken Clinton. The title is a little misleading in that it implies these Super PAC's are genuine fans of Sanders and his candidacy, as opposed to them just using him as a means to weaken their real target.

Hillary is anything but “inevitable”: The political press is lying to you about her delegate lead (Salon)

Analysis:

This Salon article argues that the media has been unfair in covering the delegate count between Sanders and Clinton by over-emphasizing the super delegate count. They make the point that these super delegates can switch at any point and those numbers are therefore very misleading.

Everyone Is Wrong About the Bernie Bros (Slate)

Analysis:

This article examines how the "Bernie Bro" meme came into existence and points out that while their is some sexist behavior amongst Sanders supporters, it does not appear emblematic of his candidacy in anyway. The writer believes both sides of this issue have been counter-productive in having a real conversation about sexism in this presidential campaign.

The New York Times, bias and Hillary Clinton (The Hill)

Analysis:

This editorial from "The Hill" explores the role bias has played in the coverage of Hillary Clinton in this election, but also addresses the issue of bias in the larger context of modern journalism. This article addresses a lot of the issues we've addresses in class, such as the role confirmation bias has played in perceptions of whether or not a news outlet is biased towards one candidate. The article points out that the New York Times, in spite of their usual principle of objectivity, have shown clear bias towards Hillary over Bernie through agenda setting, framing and a generally positive tone towards Clinton and a generally negative tone towards Sanders.

My Unicorn Problem (NYT)

-Dylan Stump

Analysis:

This NYT op-ed piece from Paul Krugman criticizes the Sanders campaign as being entirely disconnected from the political reality of the US, making the argument that while embracing the European socialism model sounds nice, it's impossible to even attempt to replicate that in the US. He uses the term "magical unicorns" to deride Sanders' for what he percieves are completely unrealistic policy goals and a failure to understand how hard it would be to implement them

Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Nomination (NYT)

Analysis:

This NYT piece from the editorial board endorses the candidacy of Hillary Clinton for president as one of the "most qualified in modern history". Compared to other NYT pieces, it is far less critical of Bernie Sanders, giving him credit for bringing important issues to the forefront of the political dialogue. However, they refrain the critique of his goals being unrealistic and say he "lacks experience" (A dubious assertion considering he served in public office long before she did). A key framing device of this article is to paint Hillary as the pinnacle of pragmatic, realistic liberalism by pitting her policies against the Republican field as opposed to Sanders.

"Bernie Sanders’s fiction-filled campaign" (Washington Post)

-Dylan Stump

Analysis:

This piece by the Washington Post editorial board is a scathing indictment of the Sanders campaign, claiming that he is presenting a simplistic fantasy narrative to appeal to voters. The main refrain of this piece is that Sanders has well-intentioned policy ideas but no real means by which to execute them.
